A1Para qué sirve
Usa un modal para deducir algo del presente cuando tienes pistas, pero no la prueba. must es "casi seguro que sí"; can't, "casi seguro que no"; might, "es posible".
- She must be in a meeting.Debe de estar en una reunión. (estás casi seguro de que sí)
- She might be stuck in traffic.
- She can't be on vacation: I just saw her in the lobby.

A2La forma: modal + verbo base
| Seguridad | Modal | Ejemplo |
|---|---|---|
| Casi seguro que sí | must | He must be at home. |
| Es posible | might · may · could | He might be at home. |
| Casi seguro que no | can't · couldn't | He can't be at home. |
She must be, he might know. Con "ser" y "estar", el verbo es be.
- You must be tired after that flight.
- That can't be the right address.Esa no puede ser la dirección correcta.
- It could be a mistake in the invoice.Podría ser un error en la factura. (could = es una posibilidad)
- Ask Laura. She might know the answer.Pregúntale a Laura. A lo mejor sabe la respuesta.

might, may y could dicen casi lo mismo: es posible. En la conversación se oyen más might y could; may suena algo más formal. Para "casi seguro que no", couldn't también sirve: That couldn't be right.
A3Si pasa ahora: be + -ing
Para una acción que está en progreso, usa modal + be + -ing: He must be working. Para un estado o un hábito, usa el verbo base: She must live near the office.
- He must be working late.Debe de estar trabajando hasta tarde. (está pasando ahora)
- They might be having lunch.A lo mejor están almorzando.
- He can't be sleeping: I can hear him on the phone.

Pon siempre be antes del -ing. Con might y can't es igual: They might be having lunch, He can't be sleeping.
A4might not, can't y las preguntas
Usa might not para "a lo mejor no" y can't para "imposible". Para preguntar, pon could antes del sujeto: Could it be the router?
- She might not be at her desk. (posible, no seguro)
- Could it be the router? It can't be: it's brand new.¿Podría ser el router? No puede ser: es nuevo.
- Who could that be at this hour?¿Quién será a esta hora?

might not deja la puerta abierta; can't la cierra. En inglés americano también se deduce con must not: He must not be home ("no debe de estar en casa"). Para "imposible", lo usual es can't; como prohibición, must not es otro uso (Unidad 32).
Para preguntar por una deducción se usan could y can, no must. También se oye Who can that be? Para responder, basta con sujeto + modal + be: It might be. It can't be.
