A1Para qué sirve
Usa estas estructuras para comparar con más precisión: cómo dos cosas cambian juntas (the more…, the more), cómo algo cambia poco a poco (more and more) y cuánta diferencia hay (twice as…).
- The more you practice, the more confident you get.Entre más practicas, más seguro te sientes. (dos cosas que cambian juntas)
- Traffic in Bogotá is getting worse and worse.
- This phone is twice as expensive as that one.

A2La forma: the + comparativo, the + comparativo
| Primera parte | Segunda parte |
|---|---|
| The more you read, | the more you learn. |
| The harder we work, | the sooner we finish. |
| The bigger the company is, | the slower it moves. |
| The less you worry, | the better you sleep. |
- The earlier we start, the earlier we finish.Entre más temprano empecemos, más temprano terminamos.
- The more clients we have, the more staff we need.Entre más clientes tengamos, más personal necesitamos. (more + sustantivo)
- The more I think about it, the less I like the idea. (the less = menos)
- The sooner, the better.Entre más pronto, mejor. (versión corta, sin verbos)

El comparativo sube al principio de su parte, aunque en una frase normal iría más atrás: You get more confident → the more confident you get. Si lleva un sustantivo, viaja con él: the more clients we have.
En la primera parte usa el presente, incluso para hablar del futuro: The sooner you call, the sooner we'll fix it. La segunda parte sí puede llevar will o can.
A3More and more, much y by far
Repite el comparativo con and para un cambio que sigue: better and better, more and more expensive.
- Flights are getting more and more expensive.Los vuelos están cada vez más caros. (palabra larga: more and more)
- The new office is a lot bigger, but only slightly more expensive.
- It's by far the best option we have.

Con palabras cortas, repite -er: faster and faster. Con las largas, repite solo more: more and more expensive, no more expensive and more expensive. También sirve con sustantivos: more and more people ("cada vez más gente").
much, a lot y far marcan una diferencia grande (much cheaper, far better); a bit y slightly, una pequeña (a bit cheaper, slightly better). Antes de un comparativo, la palabra es much, no very: "mucho más barato" es much cheaper, nunca very cheaper.
by far + superlativo es "de lejos": by far the best option. También puede ir al final: the best option by far.
A4El doble, la mitad e igual: as … as
Para decir "el doble", "la mitad" o "igual de…", pon el adjetivo entre dos as: twice as expensive as. Para "no tan… como", usa not as … as; para "ni de cerca", not nearly as … as.
- just as … as: igual de… que. Her English is just as good as mine.
- twice as … as, three times as … as, half as … as: el doble, el triple, la mitad.
- the same as, similar to, different from: igual que, parecido a, diferente de.
- The hotel isn't nearly as nice as in the photos.
- The Medellín team is three times as big as the Cali team.
- The new contract is the same as the old one, except for the price.

Con sustantivos, usa as many (contables) o as much (incontables): twice as many clients as, half as much time as. It's different than I expected.
A5Del español al inglés
Cuatro frases donde el español funciona distinto.
A6Cómo suenan the, as y than
En the more…, the more, the es débil, /ðə/, y la fuerza cae en las palabras que comparas: more y better. En as … as, cada as es débil, /əz/, y la fuerza va en el adjetivo.
- The more you practice, the better you get. · It's twice as big as mine.Escucha the y as cortos y débiles.
than también es débil, /ðən/: bigger than mine.
